The name Long Grove is taken from the large grove of oak and hickory trees which once extended southwest from Gilmer Road and Route 83, along Buffalo and other creeks and through the area of Old Route 53 and Robert Parker Coffin Road and beyond, including the Deer Grove Forest Preserve.
The Village of Long Grove is unique among suburban communities--an oasis that the rapid advance of urban sprawl has not penetrated and where residents can enjoy a relaxed and rural lifestyle. This is what has attracted its residents, and it is the official policy of the Village to preserve that character through strict? zoning. Though relatively small in terms of population, the Village is quite large in land mass, covering about 18 square miles. This translates into many acres of open space. Zoning ensures that residential properties are ample, thereby the open space of the community is retained and the privacy that residents cherish is protected. In addition, the retention of natural vegetation on both public and private property is zealously protected by Village ordinances.
Long Grove may be best known for its Historic Business District that contains some 120 shops, restaurants and specialty stores. Most are open seven days a week, all year long, and visited by local people and many who travel great distances for the experience. The success of our turn-of-the-century shopping environment is not just luck. After World War II, when the Village as we know it today began taking shape, a need to preserve the historic value and flavor of the district was recognized. Long Grove Recreation

The Long Grove Park District seeks to enhance and preserve the quality of life and the environment and to acquire and protect our natural lands for the benefit of our present and future residents.
In 1973 the Long Grove Park District began with this philosophical mission: no taxation, preservation of natural areas, retention of open space, wise stewardship of various conservancy areas and to become a depository agency of easement grants. We currently have a “no taxation” policy.
We currently own over 450 acres that encompass ponds and streams, wetlands and flood plains, woodlands, unique plant life and wildlife habitats, trails and active recreation areas which include the Gridley and Lemmon-Hill ball fields.
As the Village of Long Grove continues to grow, the park district strives to better serve the needs of the residents by offering over 40 different recreational programs and educational classes and expanding our youth sports travel teams.

Long Grove Transportation

Getting to and from Long Grove is simple! It is easily accessed by automobile via several major highways including I-294 (Tri-state Tollway), I-94 (Edens Expy), IL Route 53, I-355 (North-South Tollway), I-55 (Stevenson Expy), I-90 (Kennedy Expy), and I-290 (Eisenhower Expy).
Train service is provided by Metra Rail. Commercial air service can be found at O'Hare International Airport, one of the world's busiest, and Mitchell Field, conveniently located just south of Milwaukee.
